Oklahoma City was recently named one of the nation’s 100 best communities for young people by America’s Promise Alliance, and Whiz Kids is one of the reasons why!
Taken from press release dated January 24th, 2008
America’s Promise Alliance (the Alliance), the nation’s largest alliance dedicated to children and youth, in partnership with Capital One, announced that for the third year in a row, Oklahoma City has been named a winner of its 2008 100 Best Communities for Young People (100 Best) competition. The 100 Best competition recognizes the 100 outstanding communities across America that are the best places for young people to live and grow up. More than 300 communities in all 50 states applied this year, and the 100 winning communities span 37 states.
Oklahoma Cityhas been named a 100 Best in large part because of the way the city has identified its challenges and continues to find ways to address them. Three partners were singled out by the Allianceas contributing to Oklahoma City families. Whiz Kids was one of them! It was recognized as a faith-based, one-on-one volunteer tutoring/mentoring program serving first through eighth grade students in areas struggling with high drop-out rates. It stated that Whiz Kids sites are churches in each school’s community that donate their facilities and provide tutors. Congratulations to all you dedicated tutors and volunteers who made this happen. Whiz Kids would not be what it is without you!
Here is a quote from Mayor Mick Cornett about our city in the press release:
“We are fortunate to live in a community that cares so deeply and contributes so much to the success of ouryoung people. This recognition, for the third year in a row, is evidence that local schools and organizations are effective in improving the health, education, and well-being of city families.”
